SHERMAN BENTON DORSEY
July 24, 1930 - January 9, 2020
LOUISBURG - Sherman B. Dorsey, 89 of Louisburg, *a man of few words*, passed away at his home surrounded by family and angels on January 9th 2020. He is missed already but we will think of him often; until we see him again. We are comforted in knowing he is now with his Lord and reunited with his loved ones. Our dad, grandad, brother, uncle, cousin, friend - has been healed, delivered and now, victorious. Sherman, second of eight children, who were born in Louisburg, NC. He served his country honorably in the United States Army - 82nd Airborne. After serving his country, he, his wife and son, moved to Portsmouth VA. There they raised a family and made Portsmouth Virginia home where many wonderful memories were made. Sherman was employed with the City of Portsmouth, as a traffic engineering supervisor for over 43 years. When he retired, he and his wife went back to their roots of Franklin, County. Sherman excelled in what he loved best after retirement, working with his hands. He built buildings on his land, drove his beloved tractor, planted gardens, helped family and neighbor’s. Sherman was in his element in retirement years and we are grateful he enjoyed the rest of his life, “on the farm”.
He was predeceased by his faithful, loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Lizzie Mae Fuller Dorsey; son, Sterling B. Dorsey; infant daughter, Janelle Rose Dorsey; parents, Beecher and Emily Honeycutt Dorsey; two brothers, Lawrence Elwood and Bennett Talmadge Dorsey; three sisters, Vera Gray Tharrington, Barbara D. Layton and Brenda D Burnette.
Left to cherish and honor his memory are his son, Stuart B. Dorsey (Becky Benzie) of Chesapeake, VA; daughter, Amy Darlene Dorsey of Portsmouth, VA; daughter-in-law, Judith Dorsey of Cary; three grandchildren, Shelton B. Dorsey (Kim) of Chesapeake, VA; Kendal Dorsey of Richmond, VA; and Calie Dorsey of Chesapeake, VA; two great grandchildren, Spencer B. Dorsey and Audrey Mae Dorsey of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Linda (Ray) Shearon and Jackie (John) Parrish both of Louisburg; sisters-in-law, Shirley Dorsey of Richmond, VA and Frances M. Dorsey of LaMirada, CA., along with many other loving family members and friends.
We would like to thank all that were helpful in his final days. To the hospice staff at Amedisys; we appreciate your time and patience in his and our family’s trying times.
