Paul D. Bumgarner Obituary

Paul Dean Bumgarner

May 10, 1926 - June 27, 2020

Paul Dean Bumgarner, age 94, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 27, 2020.

Born on May 10, 1926, he was the next to the youngest child of John Bernie and Hetty Bumgarner.

He married Evelyn Marshall in 1951, and they had one daughter, Angeline.

Paul spent his adult life working with his two brothers, Roy and Henry, in the sawmill industry. Upon his retirement, he accepted a position at Louisburg College in the security department.

Paul was an active and devoted member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church which he faithfully attended as long as his health allowed. He attended church for 51 consecutive years without missing a Sunday.

He was preceded in death by his wife  of 64 years, Evelyn Bumgarner. He was also preceded in death by his parents John Bernie and Hetty Bumgarner, two of his sisters Mary Steed and Alma Short, and his two brothers Roy and Henry Bumgarner.

He is survived by his only child Angela Baker and her husband Ben, granddaughters Jamie Sloop and husband Mike, Jennifer Baker, and great grandchildren Hunter and Ethan Nordan, and Ava and Koy Sloop. He is also survived by one sister, Bonnie Price of Raleigh, NC, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

His family and friends will never forget his love for animals, especially horses. He won numerous awards for his quarter horses at horse shows throughout the state. He taught many friends and acquaintances the art of horseback riding, and he trained and tamed wild horses. He has been called an animal whisperer extraordinaire. He loved playing his harmonica and entertained many residents and workers at Franklin Oaks with his talent. Paul was fond of ballroom dancing and square dancing, and he and Evelyn spent many evenings at various dancing venues with friends. Paul also had a talent for fixing small engines.

He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Due to Covid-19, a private graveside service will be held at Maple Springs Baptist Church in Louisburg, NC.
