Charles Ray Phelps, 78, passed away in his home on June 11, 2023, with his wife in his arms and his son by his side.
Charles was born to Collie and Emma Phelps on February 27, 1945.
Growing up in Katesville and attending school in Franklinton, he learned the value of hard work, from working in tobacco to driving a school bus. He would later go on to drive for Greyhound professionally. He spent his later working years at Taylor's Nursery and Alcan Packaging. In his spare time, he could be found working in the yard, where he showed a true mastery in the arts of landscaping and gardening.
Charles met his match, Cindy in 1994. They quickly bonded over their mutual love of horses, the great outdoors and the American West. The two were married June 3, 1995, and Charles gained a ready-made family, complete with both a wife and a son.
Charles is survived by his wife, Cindy; his son, Matt Debnam (Kristine); his sister, Jean Gordon; and many cherished nephews, great-nephews and great-neices.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jimmy and Howard Neal; his brother-in-law, Bob Gordon; and his nephew, Michael Green.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15 at Strickland Funeral Home in Louisburg. The family will receive friends one hour before the service and at other times at the home.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
