CHARLENE E. HORTON

October 27, 1953 – July 5, 2026

Charlene Evelyne Horton, 72, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, formerly of the Pilot community, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2026, with Greg by her side.

Charlene was the daughter of the late Perry Waddell Horton and Evelyne Stallings Horton. She was preceded in death by her brother Herby Horton.

          She worked for the NCDOT in the Physical/Accounting section for approximately 41 years.  Her best friend was Christy Martin and until I arrived on the scene, they attended all the NCSU football and basketball home games and more for many years.  Charlene moved back to Pilot in 2012 when she retired to take care of her mom and dad.  She took great care of them, and she has to be the hardest working woman I’ve ever seen. She developed a great love for our dog Jack, a beautiful white Labrador and he passed away just before his 7th birthday, and she never got over his death.  And as per her wishes he will rest beside her.  She loved being in the sun and spending time at the beach.  After her mom’s death we moved there permanently… She died of complications due to the ALS Disease.

Charlene is survived by her life partner of 25 years, Greg Spell; Aunt Florence Stallings Williams and her canine nephew, Billy of Pilot, numerous cousins.

A memorial graveside service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Stallings Family Cemetery, 186 Stallings Road, Zebulon, NC 27597,   with Pastor Richard Price officiating.
