Avis Vivian Leverna Lynch was born on November 11, 1941 in Oak City, North Carolina and departed this life on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at the Wake Med Hospital, Raleigh, North Carolina. She was the second youngest child born to Reverend Augustus C. and Carrie Burnett Lynch. She was united with Christ and baptized at an early age at the Jones Chapel Baptist Church in Oak City, North Carolina. Vivian was predeceased by her parents: Reverend Augustus C. and Carrie Burnett Lynch; two sisters: Lillie Blanche Jones and Lucy O. Hudson; and one brother: Oliver E. Lynch.

She graduated from West Martin High School in 1959 and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from the Elizabeth City State Teacher’s College, now Elizabeth City State University in 1963. She also received a Master’s Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

“Viv” as she was affectionately called by her family and close friends was a retired teacher for the Wake County Public School System after having taught for over thirty-five years. We celebrate the number of young lives that she touched and remember “fondly” many of the hilarious stories that she would recall during her tenure as an elementary school teacher.

She loved to sing and participated in a number of choirs and ensembles within the Wake County area. She loved to cook, laugh, and enjoyed being with her family. At the end of many family gatherings, she would be beaming and exclaiming that “it was a good day”!

Despite her many health challenges, Vivian’s outlook on life was that it was to be cherished. She accepted those health challenges with the same resilience that she with everything in her life. She did her research, asked questions, did more research, and asked more questions. There were many times when there were differences of opinions between Vivian and the health care providers and she would not hesitate to let them “listen” to her side of things. She was always an independent thinker and if it did not sound “right” she would have to be persuaded to do it.

Left to cherish the memories of life and legacy are her brothers:  Reverend Lorenzo A. Lynch (Lorine) and Burnett R. Lynch (Janie); two sisters:  Dorothy M. Hairston and Reverend Emily D. Jenkins; six nieces; and nineteen nephews. She will be lovingly remembered by a host great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of her life will be held 11 am Saturday, March 19, at East Wake Church of God, 2709 NC Hwy 97, Wendell with visitation beginning at 10 am prior to the service.  Burial at Jones Chapel Cemetery in Oak City.
